Common Side Effects of Chemotherapy and Their Solutions

22 November 2025

When people start chemotherapy, they usually expect the worst. Most of what they’ve heard is either outdated or exaggerated. The truth is, today’s treatment is very different. The medicines are more refined, and doctors know how to manage the reactions better. What matters most is that you tell us what you feel early, so we can fix it fast.

Tiredness

Feeling tired is common. It doesn’t mean something is wrong it just means your body is working hard. The medicine targets fast-growing cells, and that takes energy. Rest when you need to, eat small meals often, and keep sipping water through the day. A short walk in the evening helps you feel fresh.
If tiredness becomes too much, your oncology specialist can check your blood levels or change the treatment gap slightly. It usually settles after each cycle.

Nausea

Some people feel mild nausea after sessions. It’s not constant, and we always give tablets to prevent it. Eat light food, avoid oily or spicy dishes, and don’t let your stomach stay empty for long. Ginger, lemon water, or plain toast help.
If vomiting happens, tell your doctor. We adjust the medicine immediately no need to wait or suffer. That’s part of modern cancer treatment.

Hair Fall

This is something many patients worry about. Yes, some types of chemotherapy can cause hair fall, but it’s temporary. Hair starts growing back once the sessions stop. Keep your scalp clean, use mild shampoo, and don’t rub hard while drying. Many people choose scarves or caps; what matters is staying comfortable, not self-conscious.
Remember, losing hair doesn’t mean losing strength. It’s just part of the process.

Mouth Sores or Taste Change

Sometimes the mouth feels sore or dry. Rinse with salt water, brush gently, and avoid hot food. If you get small ulcers, we’ll give you a mild soothing gel. Taste can also change; some people find food bland or metallic. Try squeezing a little lemon juice or adding herbs to bring the flavor back.

Low Immunity

The treatment can reduce white blood cells for a short time. That makes you more likely to catch infection. Wash your hands often, stay away from people with cough or fever, and rest properly. If you get fever, call your oncology specialist right away. We may need to give a small injection or medicine to boost your immunity.

This phase doesn’t last long, and your body usually recovers well between cycles.

Skin and Nails

You might notice dryness or darkening of skin and nails. That’s normal and fades after treatment. Use gentle soap and moisturizer. Avoid harsh detergents or hot water. If anything itches or peels, tell us early small changes in care can stop it from worsening.

Emotional Health

During cancer treatment, mood swings are common. Some days you’ll feel fine, other days not so much. That’s okay. Talk to your doctor or a counselor if it feels heavy. At IOCI, we often connect patients to support groups where they can talk to others going through the same journey. Sharing helps more than people think.

The Bigger Picture

Every side effect has a solution. What matters is not to hide it or delay telling your team. The earlier we know, the easier it is to manage. Most people finish their chemotherapy feeling stronger than they expected. The body adjusts, heals, and moves forward.
