When you start your first session of cancer treatment, it’s normal to feel anxious. Most people worry because they don’t know what actually happens inside the room. I always tell my patients, “See, the first day looks tougher than it really is.” Once you understand what’s going to happen, it feels simple and routine.
Before the Session
Your oncology specialist will sit with you before starting. You’ll know where the treatment will be given, how many sittings you’ll have, and how long each one lasts. Knowing these things helps you stay calm. On the day of treatment, wear loose cotton clothes and eat a light meal before you come. You don’t have to skip food unless we specifically tell you to. Carry some water, stay hydrated, and if you want, bring a family member along. It’s always easier when someone waits outside and you know you’re not alone.
During the Planning Stage
Before your actual treatment starts, we do a small planning process. We take a scan and mark the exact area that needs to be treated. Sometimes we use tiny stickers or dots on the skin to guide the machine later. Don’t try to clean them off at home. When you walk into the radiation room, the machine may look big, but it’s completely safe. We’ll help you lie down on the table in a comfortable position. Once you’re set, the team steps out to control the machine, but you’re always on camera and microphone. The machine will move around quietly. You don’t feel or see anything. There’s no pain, no heat, and no vibration. In about fifteen minutes, you’ll be done and can walk out on your own.
After the Session
Once you finish, you can go home straight away. Many people feel perfectly fine; some feel a little tired, which is normal. Rest for a while, eat something light, and drink plenty of water. If your skin in that area feels dry or itchy after a few days, tell us. We’ll give you a mild cream or guide you on what to use. Don’t try new lotions or oils without asking. It’s also better to wear soft cotton clothes and avoid rubbing the treated skin. These small things make recovery smoother.
Keeping a Routine
Try to come at the same time every day. Regular timing helps your body adjust. Sleep well, eat balanced meals, and keep some gentle activity in your day. Even a short evening walk helps. Radiation works slowly, so staying consistent is very important. Think of each session as one small step toward healing.
What to Expect Emotionally
See, the first few sessions always feel strange. But after a week, most patients tell me, “Doctor, it’s easier than I expected.” That’s because modern radiation oncology is far more advanced. The machines are designed to target only the tumor, keeping healthy parts safe. You don’t feel anything, and there’s nothing to fear. What helps most is coming in with a calm mind and trusting the process.
