Role of Radiation in Breast Cancer Treatment

12 November 2025

When women come to discuss breast cancer treatment, many of them are nervous. Some have already had surgery, some are midway through chemotherapy, and almost all ask me the same thing  “Doctor, do I really need radiation after all this?”
I tell them, yes, in many cases it’s needed. Radiation is not a punishment; it’s protection. It’s that last, careful step that helps make sure cancer doesn’t come back.

Understanding What Radiation Does

Radiation therapy uses focused energy to kill any leftover cancer cells that might be too small to see on scans. Even after a successful operation, a few cells may still be hiding in the nearby area. Radiation cleans that up.
It doesn’t make you radioactive, and it doesn’t hurt. You lie still on a table, the machine moves around you, and the rays go only to the exact spot that’s planned. You don’t feel anything while it’s happening.

When We Recommend It

Not everyone with breast cancer needs radiation, but for many, it’s an important part of care. If you’ve had breast-conserving surgery, radiation helps keep the remaining breast tissue safe. If the whole breast was removed, we may still treat the chest wall or lymph node area.
Your oncology specialist decides this after looking at the reports  the stage, tumor size, and whether lymph nodes are involved. Every case is unique on its own, so the plan is always made just for you.

What You Can Expect During Treatment

Before the first session, we take special multiple scans to mark the exact spot where radiation should reach. It’s like drawing a map for the machine to follow.
Each sitting takes about 10–15 minutes. You don’t feel or see the radiation. Once done, you can go home right away. There’s no need for rest or hospitalization unless there’s another medical reason.
The total number of sittings can vary  usually four to six weeks of short daily sessions.

How the Body Reacts

Radiation is gentle, but the body may respond a little. You might feel slightly tired after a few days, or notice a bit of redness or dryness on the treated skin. Sometimes, the breast or chest area feels tight.
These are normal and temporary. Our nurses and doctors will guide you on simple skincare and nutrition during the process. Most women manage it easily while continuing with their daily routine.

Why Radiation Is Important

In breast cancer treatment, radiation gives confidence  that the cancer has been fully controlled. It reduces the risk of recurrence and, in many cases, allows breast-conserving surgery instead of complete removal.
In short, radiation protects the success of surgery. It adds long-term safety and peace of mind.
